We are proud to announce our support of Mike Kalush and 1 Across Colorado, riding his Unicycle across Colorado to raise awareness and to pay tribute to single parents everywhere. With more than 13 million American’s struggling with single parenthood every day, 1 Across Colorado represents a symbolic struggle, by unicycling 500 miles across Colorado on one wheel. His two week journey begins this Friday, August 17th from the Kansas border to the Utah border. His mission is to collect stories, not money. ”It’s a ride of respect,” Kalush said. “I see what my sisters go through. And just throwing money at them wasn’t fulfilling for anyone. Sometimes, just knowing that you’re noticed and appreciated is enough to get you through a hard time.” In an interview with The Denver Post, Kalush describes why he chose a unicycle to ride across Colorado to raise awareness for single parents. “I’m riding my unicycle because it’s great symbolism: keeping perfect balance, you can never coast, you have to work for every inch. Falling off is easy, getting back up can be hard. And people with two wheels have no idea what it’s like to ride on one.” In an interview with 7News, The Denver News Channel, Mike Kalush explains how a random encounter with a Unicyclist in Barcelona, inspired him to ride across Colorado to pay tribute to single parents.
If you would like to share your own story of single parenthood or have a story of a friend or family member that you’d like to share, you can post them on 1 Across Colorado’s Facebook or Twitter page. You can also contact Mike directly at [email protected]. To keep up to date with 1 Across Colorado’s journey and stories, you can also follow Jay’s Valet’s social media pages by clicking any of the following social icons: We truly hope that this is a story that will move and inspire you.

The Journey
Mike Kalush of 1 Across Colorado will begin his 500 miles trek across Colorado this Friday, August 17th from the Kansas boarder. The journey will take about 2 weeks, east to west, from Kansas to Utah along the Interstate 70 corridor. He plans to stop in little towns along the route, in places he has never been before. Kalush’s father is coming from Michigan with a motor home to follow along on the journey, and to provide a place to sleep at night. Kalush plans to break up his days in two chunks, with 20 miles in the morning and 20 miles in the evening, depending on the weather. Kalush invites others to ride along with him on this journey and to meet up to share stories of single parenthood. If you would like to connect with Mike, you can email him at [email protected]. |
How Jay’s Valet Got Involved w/ 1 Across Colorado Jay Mills, the owner of Jay’s Valet, ran into Mike Kalush at an event in May, where he learned about 1 Across Colorado’s mission to spread awareness for single parents. Jay was immensely touched by the cause and instantly thought about several Jay’s Valet team members who struggle with single parenting on a daily basis. Partnered with Mike’s story of his seven sisters, six of who are or have been single parents, Jay was inspired. Without hesitation, Jay and Jay’s Valet stepped up to help support 1 Across Colorado’s mission, both by sponsoring the 1 Across Colorado’s Jersey and by helping spread awareness of the cause.
In response to Jay’s Valet’s devoted support, Mike surprised us at the Jay’s Valet office, baring gifts. Including a Jersey with the Jay’s Valet logo printed on the sleeve, and a T-Shirt with the 1 Across
Needless to say, Jay’s Valet is excited to support Mike Kalush and 1 Across Colorado’s Mission.

The Support You Have Shown for Tyler Ryan
has Truly Made a Difference
On December 28th, 2011, we at Jay’s Valet sent out an email and blog posted to all of our friends and business partners regarding an incident that resulted in one of our valet managers, losing a leg while acting as a Good Samaritan. The feedback and support that you have shown in response to Tyler Ryan’s story has been overwhelming, to say the least. Jay’s Valet is lucky to have the most kind-hearted, good-willed friends and associates that really step up and show support when it’s needed most.
Just a week after the initial email, on January 5th, Jay’s Valet hosted a surprise fundraiser event for Tyler at The Remington Park Racing Casino in Oklahoma City with nearly 300 people in attendance. Tyler thought he was showing up at his old workplace to surprise all of his friends.
Tyler was completely shocked:
To find the room filled with nearly 300 of Tyler’s friends, family and supporters:
Oklahoma News9 and News Channel 4 reporters were there to catch Tyler’s face during the big surprise:
Followed by an overwhelming amount of hugs and well wishes:
The surprises were far from over, when Country Singer Vince Gill stepped away from the recording studio to call in and speak with Tyler:
Houston Cowen also Skyped in to invite Tyler and his family to an expense-free, weeklong experience with Challenge Aspen this summer, a program that provides recreational and educational services to people with disabilities. The week will be filled with kayaking, skiing and other activities, including the chance to meet Vince Gill and Amy Grant, who take part in this event every year.
Army Major-General Deering stepped up to the stage to present Tyler with a Certificate of Excellence and a medal for his acts for being a Good Samaritan:
Clay Bennett, the owner of NBA’s Oklahoma Thunder, also provided the entire Ryan family with exclusive seating in his private suite for the following night’s game against the Houston Rockets. This was followed by the biggest surprise, when Jay Mills and Ken Wartell presented Tyler with a giant check for $22,500. This check includes $10,000 from Jay’s Valet (with help from our friends and business partners), $5,000 from Global Gaming Solutions, $5,000 from Remington Park, and $2,500 from Thoroughbred Racing of Oklahoma.
The entire event raised $31,379 for Tyler, through raffles and donations from the attendees. Tyler’s Mom, Shirley Coleman, helped pull the names for the raffle:
Jay’s Valet has made it public that they plan to continue support for Tyler for many years to come as Tyler will always be considered part of the Jay’s Valet family.
Thank you to all of you who have called in to make donations and show your support. This event could not have happened without you. It is amazing what can happen within just a week of a single email. There is one thing that we know for sure. Tyler’s tattoo will continue to transcend into new meaning, because with these amazing friends and support, he can’t help but to
“Keep Moving Forward”

In a single moment, just the blink of an eye, any of our lives can be changed for ever.
In over 20 years of service and connecting businesses, Jay’s Valet has only asked for help from our friends and business partners once. Nearly 7 years ago now, Hurricane Katrina prompted us to request that support. In less than a week, your collective contributions came to nearly $15,000 being given back to the communities devastated most by Hurricane Katrina. That support allowed us to drive a 30 foot truck filled with food, water, clothing, and other goods that we were able to provide to numerous families in need. Your support is what made a huge difference in those family’s lives.
We are once again, seeking the kindness and support from our friends and business partners. As many of you have heard, one of Jay’s Valet’s team members was severely injured in an accident in November of this year.
From day one, Tyler Ryan has always taken the extra steps to make a difference in people’s lives, both at work and on his spare time. After 6 years of working with us, it is easy to say that Tyler portrays the meaning of making a difference. On November 9th of 2011, Tyler was driving home, when he observed a couple stranded on the side of the road with a flat tire. Being a Good Samaritan, Tyler didn’t think twice about turning around. What transpired would trigger a traumatic series of events that only tests Tyler’s tried and true spirit in one of the most unfathomable ways. As Tyler pulled the spare tire from the trunk, in the blink of an eye, Tyler’s life was changed for ever. An inattentive driver slammed into Tyler, crushing his lower body, pinning him between the two cars. Tyler underwent numerous surgeries which will forever transform his life. His lower body was so badly damaged, that it resulted in an above the knee amputation of his left leg; surgery to repair his right leg took rods in all major bones, and he also went through back surgery.
Tyler has triumphed through this traumatic experience. A tattoo Tyler got on his arm six months prior, stating “Keep Moving Forward” has truly created a trend that has transcended to an entirely new meaning in Tyler’s life and for those around him. Tyler was transferred to strength and conditioning therapy on December 5th, and on December 12th, he took a tremendous leap forward and took his first steps. Proving that his spirit is “tried and true,” in an interview with Oklahoma’s News9 reporter, regarding if he would do it all over again and stop to help, he stated, “I’d do it again a hundred times.” On December 23rd, Tyler was released from rehab, and got to go home for the first time since November 9th.
As triumphant his story is, Tyler still has a long struggle to go. He is not only suffering physically and emotionally, but also financially. This is why, after 20 plus years of service, and only asking for help to support the Hurricane Katrina victims, we once more request your kindness. As a company, we have financially contributed and plan on continuing support for Tyler for many years to come. With that in mind, Tyler can still use additional support. In just a single moment, Tyler’s life was changed for ever. A reminder to us all that life is fragile and can change in the blink of an eye.
There is also a fundraiser selling “Keep Moving Forward” bracelets and t-shirts. If you are interested, please let us know. Tim Tebow and John Lynch are already on the bandwagon to help support Tyler’s courageous fight. If you have been fortunate enough to meet Tyler, than you know he is generous, kindhearted, and always willing to bend over backwards for people. You also know that despite this tragic accident, none of that will change. If anything, this is a lesson to us all; that bad things can still happen to good people.
